Instructor: Kate Tremel
Tuition: $55 Lab
fee: $25
Introduce little color or a lot of color into you life! This
comprehensive one-day workshop with Kate Tremel, will give you the
skills to begin experimenting with low-fire in-glaze painting using
colored stains and oxides to obtain vibrant, decorative and painterly
finished surfaces on your pots and tiles. Spend an enriching day with
Kate, as she shares her wealth of knowledge about everything ceramic.
Beginning perhaps as early as the 9th century, Middle Eastern potters
developed opaque white glazes, which sought to imitate Chinese
porcelains. Much like working a fresco, metallic oxides were painted on
top of the raw glaze. The fired ware has a rich, lustrous finish.
In the 13th century Moorish potters introduced this technique in
southern Euro and it developed into many regional styles throughout the
continent and in the New World. In this class you will learn to mix and
test color samples. Using bisqued earthenware tiles and small plates
students will experiment with a variety of painting techniques using
overglaze stains mixed into a formulated medium specifically for brush
work. You will be able to take your new palette of colors with you to
continue practicing Majolica in your studio.

ENCAUSTIC
COLLAGE - June 27-28, Saturday 10-5 & Sunday 10-4
Instructor: Leslie Sobel
Tuition: $100 Lab
fee: $50
Each summer Yourist Studio presents a non-ceramic workshop for
students interested in exploring new mediums. This year’s new medium is
taught by Ann Arbor’s most experienced encaustic artist Leslie Sobel.
Encaustic’s ancient Egyptian roots date back 2000 years.
It is a beautiful, luminous material made from bees wax and pigment. By
applying layers of wax one is able to achieve various textures and
relief. It is also the collage medium par excellence.
Participants will learn how to use encaustic as an element in mixed
media assemblage. This two-day workshop will explore the use of
encaustic with collage materials in two and three dimensions. We will
use found objects, old prints/photographs or drawings, while at the
same time utilizing the ancient practice of encaustic painting.
Participants should bring materials they are interested in
incorporating into mixed media assemblage or collage pieces. This
includes but is not limited to old photos, magazines, tools, small
objects, natural materials like seeds, dried leaves, pebbles, etc.
Encaustic, brushes, color, heated palettes, torches and flat substrates
will be provided. *Students who would like to work in wooden
boxes or do more elaborate assemblage should contact the instructor to
discuss possibilities.
This workshop is for participants of all skill levels

with Nancy Bulkley’s effervescence is not to be missed.
In this workshop you will create at least one ceramic birdhouse.
We will approach the construction from both an artistic angle as well
as considering what local birds like best in a home. The
birdhouses will be made from clay slabs, pinched forms and various
